Network Rail awards challenging and exciting project

Network Rail has once again entrusted a high profile, challenging and exciting refurbishment project to May Gurney’s Rail Services team – the refurbishment and replacement of the roof to Victoria Station in central London.

Victoria Station - a Grade II listed busy hub railway station serving the south of England - has been in operation for 146 years. Recent investigations identified a need to replace various components of the roof covering.

The project, valued at circa £24m, includes works associated with replacing the existing roof coverings, grit blasting and painting of the arched roof trusses, significant steelwork repairs and associated M&E system relocation/upgrading.

The area to be re-roofed covers eight platforms, major communication boards, an entrance to London Underground, and many concessionary retail outlets and major retail units.

As Victoria Station has approximately 350,000 pedestrians passing through on a daily basis, there’s an overriding need to secure the safety and normal operations of those using the station during the works.

John Wilkinson, managing director of major projects and rail engineering, said: “This award - coming directly after completion of the High Level Bridge in Newcastle upon Tyne - yet again demonstrates the confidence that Network Rail has in May Gurney to deliver high profile schemes with significant logistical and safety issues.

“We are delighted to be entrusted with the refurbishment of the roof on such a significant and strategically important station.”

The works are planned to commence on site shortly and are programmed for completion by February 2010.
