Awards round up - July 2008

In July we enjoyed success in the Network Rail Environmental Awards, QPA Restoration Awards, the CITB Construction Skills Awards – and one of our employees has gained a Pure Service Award from South West Water.

Network Rail Environmental Awards
We were thrilled to receive the prestigious Team Contribution Award at the Network Rail Environmental Awards ceremony on 3 July.

The award was for the formation of a dedicated in-house team to tackle the environmental challenges faced in the work we deliver for Network Rail.

The team undertakes surveys in-house to deliver cost and time savings for Network Rail; develops and delivers in-house environmental awareness training; and works with - not against - statutory bodies. Team members are also regularly invited to lecture at universities and schools, and one member is an ambassador for women in construction with the CITB.

Craig O’Brien, environmental manager EPS, said: “The award was won by a team with two main drivers - passion and commitment.

“We continually strive to ensure May Gurney’s ‘Be the best’ principles are encapsulated within our work - whether we are addressing on site environmental issues, liaising with statutory bodies, or acting as ambassadors in educational establishments.

“We are immensely proud that the team’s achievements have been recognised by such an important customer - this hopefully bodes well for the future.”

QPA Restoration Awards
Ayton Products, our surfacing products business, enjoyed success at the QPA Restoration Awards ceremony on 3 July.

The prestigious QPA Restoration Awards are given for outstanding achievement in quarry restoration.

The award was for work we carried out to restore Lynford Pit (see pic above) prior to handing back the site in December 2007. The award was made to Ayton Products, the Forestry Commission and land agent PDE Consulting.

Lynford Pit occupies 49.2 hectares and is a restored sand and gravel quarry within an area of Important Landscape Quality and an Environmentally Sensitive Area. It also lies partly within a Special Protection Area, is bounded on three sides by a SSSI and contains a County Wildlife Site – a floated water meadow.

The site comprises two lakes and an extensive variety of habitats and species have successfully been introduced, meeting biodiversity objectives. These habitats include valley fen, reedswamp mosaic, dry acid grassland, reedbeds and a floodplain grazing marsh. More than 4000 trees have been planted.

David Sterry – Power 100 listing
David Sterry, May Gurney chairman, has been named number five in the 2008 EDP Power 100 listing – up from number nine in 2007. The Power 100 gauges who wields influence in the regional economy, and how much weight their decisions and actions carry. Click here to see the full listing.

Callum McNab – Pure Service Award
Callum Macnab, customer liaison officer working on the South West Water (SWW) Mains Rehabilitation Programme, has been awarded a ‘Pure Service’ award in recognition of his excellent work with SWW’s customers during June.

One customer, Mr Herring of the Blue Hayes Hotel in St Ives, said: “The support and service we are receiving from Callum Macnab has been excellent and I must express my thanks to both SWW and May Gurney for the service received while these essential works are carried out.”

In contrast, just 12 months previously, SWW received a series of complaints from Mr Herring, detailing his unhappiness at how rehab work and lack of proper communication was affecting his business.

CITB Construction Skills Awards
Several of our apprentices and trainees were recognised at the CITB Construction Skills Awards on 24 July, which are given to students attending the National Construction College at Bircham Newton in northwest Norfolk.

Adam Gigli, an apprentice with Cartledge, our specialist street lighting business, won the Communal Living award - his brother Dan, an apprentice with our Essex highways team, was also nominated for the award. Adam was also nominated for Best Sportsperson award.

And three of our trainees - Dan Hines (general construction apprentice), Jordan Broughton (civil engineering technician) and Stuart Dack (plant mechanic) – were named ‘framework achievers’ having completed their studies and graduated from the college.

Other short listings
We’re delighted to have been short listed for the prestigious Silver Helmet Award for safety at the 2008 Contract Journal Construction Industry Awards.

There’s tough competition for what is considered one of the top safety awards in the industry. We’ll find out if we’ve been successful at the awards dinner in London on 22 September.

We’ve also been shortlisted for the 2008 National Rail Awards, which will be presented on 18 September. The short listing is in the Civil Engineering Achievement of the Year category for the refurbishment and strengthening of the High Level Bridge over the River Tyne.
