Integrated services appeal to DCWW

May Gurney’s in-house capacity to deliver a range of integrated services is proving to be a differentiator in winning work under a Major Civils Framework with Dwr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW), which went live in April 2012.

May Gurney is about to start work on a £1.3m upgrade of Shobdon Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) in Herefordshire.

This design and build project involves replacing and modifying the infrastructure at each stage of the treatment process, including new primary and humus settlement tanks to be constructed using innovative pre-cast concrete methods.

Confined by apple orchards and an airfield, working space is limited on site and with the treatment process needing to be maintained though the installation of a temporary plant, pre-cast solutions offer a safer, cost-effective means of achieving the programme within the permitted boundaries.

Andy Muncer, May Gurney framework manager for DCWW, said: “The Shobdon project has been a great opportunity to demonstrate our in-house capability to DCWW.

“The design has been delivered by our Professional Services team, operational delivery will be through directly employed local staff and we even undertook the ecological survey in-house.

“Our in-house capability to offer integrated services on a turnkey basis is proving to be a differentiator for us.

“Shobdon is the first of several opportunities due to start on site where we have had Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) working collaboratively with DCWW’s own capital delivery team to meet some challenging programme and budget targets.”

May Gurney has also recently commenced work at Connah’s Quay in North Wales, in partnership with Imtech Process, to accommodate growth and improve final effluent quality at the town’s WwTW.

This £450,000 contract was secured competitively and includes a new disc filter, biological filter and humus tank.

Andy Muncer added: “Since the DCWW Major Civils Framework went live we have also secured status as a mechanical framework supplier and been awarded a contract to undertake 800 surveys of Private Sewage Pump Stations throughout Wales, ahead of their transfer to DCWW in 2016 under The Water Industry (Schemes for Adoption of Private Sewers) Regulations 2011.

“This journey with DCWW started with delivery of small integrated schemes back in early AMP4, but these latest opportunities provide the platform to demonstrate further our added value and build a team for a long term, sustained commitment to DCWW and the region.”
