New 'green' recycling service for Bridgend's gardeners

Working on behalf of Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC), May Gurney is introducing an improved garden waste collection service for the borough’s residents.

BCBC has achieved huge improvements in the amount of waste it recycles since joining forces with May Gurney a little over three years ago. In that time it has progressed from one of the worst councils in Wales for recycling to one of the best, as a result of a kerbside sort scheme - the Welsh Government’s preferred model.

Now householders will also be able to have their garden waste collected from the kerbside too.

As well as meeting growing demand from householders, the improved service will reduce the amount of green waste being sent to landfill and help meet challenging targets for recycling and composting.

The trial collection service, which is expected to improve recycling and composting performance by up to 6%, will start in April 2013 and operate during the main growing season until November.

Householders who wish to take part will be supplied with two reusable bags for their green waste, which will be collected from the kerbside fortnightly.

Councillor Phil White, cabinet member for communities, said: “This will be a big improvement to our current services. Not only will it help householders who wish to take part, it will mean their waste gets disposed of in a more sustainable way.

“I hope that householders will embrace this new green opportunity, just as they have with our weekly collection scheme.”

Adam Jones, May Gurney contract manager for Bridgend, said: “We would like to thank the householders of the county borough for their participation in the kerbside recycling services provided by May Gurney at Bridgend.

“The level of public commitment to recycling is demonstrated by the fact that Bridgend currently sends less waste to landfill than any other part of Wales.

“Given continued public support, the new kerbside garden waste collection scheme represents a real opportunity to further improve upon Bridgend’s already strong recycling performance. We look forward to working with the people of Bridgend to ensure that the new scheme is successful.”
