Good progress on £11m Scunthorpe school revamp

Work is well underway to revamp The St Lawrence Academy, the fourth school to be refurbished as part of North Lincolnshire Council's £86.9m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme that is transforming Scunthorpe's secondary schools.

The BSF programme is being delivered by Engage North Lincolnshire, a partnership comprising North Lincolnshire Council, May Gurney, MASS Consultants, NPS Consultants and BSF Investments.

Work started in June 2011 and is being carried out in two phases. The first phase, to demolish the existing East wing and build the steel structure, is scheduled for completion by September 2012. The second phase, to demolish and then rebuild the West wing of the new building, will be completed by September 2013.

The scheme, which will lead to a new way of teaching and bring the school into the 21st Century, includes two new teaching wings, new outdoor learning areas, social spaces, a new atrium and refurbished sports facilities. The 6,500 sq m buildings will include science and technology, general teaching classrooms, break out rooms for small groups, and will accommodate 630 pupils. New information communication technology will be provided as part of the project.

Cllr Rob Waltham, cabinet member for adult and children's services at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We are committed to providing a first-rate education for young people in North Lincolnshire. The BSF project is a significant investment and will turn secondary education on its head.

“We will see vibrant, modern buildings that cater for today's needs and expectations.

“I want young people to get the very best out of their education and the Government's £20m continued commitment to North Lincolnshire Schools will help by providing an excellent environment in which to learn.”

Phill Dawowsky, the school's director of specialisms, said: “Excitement is building among pupils. The demolition work is moving at a fast pace on site and the pupils are constantly being updated about progress to ensure they feel part of the transformation.

“A temporary learning village has been established at the school so that disruption is kept to an absolute minimum while building work takes place.”

Year 11 student Zac Cowling, said: “The new classrooms would make a huge difference.

“The new building is specially designed to accommodate revolutionary technology and equipment which will really assist our studies and make a huge difference. I think the building will help to inspire new students and raise their aspirations even higher.”

Richard Alport, LEP (Local Education Partnership) general manager, said: “Engage North Lincolnshire is very pleased to have a further opportunity to work with our partners to deliver this excellent educational facility for North Lincolnshire and the Academy.

“The refurbishment of existing and the provision of new build extensions over the next two years will have a positive impact on the Academy's success.”
