May Gurney trials quad bike gritter in Surrey

May Gurney is trialling a quad bike gritter to help keep Surrey's roads clear of snow and ice this winter.

The four-wheeler is being used to grit roads and clear snow in places ordinary trucks cannot go, as part of May Gurney's highways maintenance contract with Surrey County Council.

Ian Lake, Surrey County Council's cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “As part of our campaign to keep Surrey moving this winter, we're trialling with May Gurney this quad bike to get to those difficult to reach areas.”

May Gurney has also added 24 trucks to Surrey County Council's gritter fleet to help keep the county moving this winter. The new vehicles take the number at the council's disposal to more than 40. In addition, May Gurney and Surrey County Council have stockpiled 17,000 tonnes of salt – 4,000 tonnes more than last year – and an extra 110 miles of road will be regularly treated this winter.

Footnote: May Gurney's £60m long-term highways maintenance contract with Surrey County Council began in April 2011. The contract represents a £4.1m annual saving on the previous highways deal while delivering higher standards.
