HRH The Princess Royal to open Melior College

HRH The Princess Royal will open Melior Community College, which has been built as part of the North Lincolnshire BSF project, on 19 January 2012.

While at the college, the Princess Royal will also view the Heroes' Wall erected to commemorate the memory of three ex-pupils who died in the service of their country.

Melior Community College is a new £18m purpose built school funded through the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project. It replaces Thomas Sumpter and South Leys Schools which amalgamated four years ago.

Before officially opening the college, Her Royal Highness will look round various departments, talk to staff and pupils and see a performance in the atrium. She will then meet the families and members of the armed forces of the deceased soldiers before viewing the Heroes' Wall.

Cllr Rob Waltham, cabinet member for adult and children's services at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Melior Community College is a fantastic building that we should all be very proud of – not just pupils, but staff and parents.

“Improving the learning environment to give pupils the very best chance in life is a priority for the council and I want to ensure that the BSF programme delivers what it set out to do – transform secondary education locally.

“Everyone has worked hard to get this far and they deserve credit for their dedication and commitment in striving for the best.”

Angela Briggs, principal of Melior Community College, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Her Royal Highness is coming to open the school.

“It is a fantastic building and we are delighted to be in and settled, and this opening marks the beginning of a new era for Melior.”
