West Oxfordshire up to fifth place in recycling table

Just a year after the launch of a new recycling service delivered by May Gurney on behalf of West Oxfordshire District Council, the district is now ranked fifth best recycler out of the country’s 291 local authorities.

The fifth placed position has been confirmed by WasteDataFlow , the web based system for municipal waste data reporting by UK local authorities to government.

West Oxfordshire’s new recycling service gives people more opportunities to recycle and residents have responded fantastically by almost doubling recycling rates.

In West Oxfordshire over the past year:
• Around 15,000 tonnes of waste have been diverted from landfill, saving more than £1m in disposal costs.
• In excess of 3,500 tonnes of food waste have been converted into fertiliser for farmland and into electricity fed into the National Grid.
• More than 9,900 tonnes of garden waste has been composted.

Councillor David Harvey, cabinet member for environment, said: “It’s fantastic to know that we’re one of the best recyclers in the country but we are continuing to look to make improvements.

“The introduction of tetrapak collections last April and the current flyaway plastics trial are great examples of how we are striving to do more.”

Craig Cutajar, May Gurney contracts manager in West Oxfordshire, added: “We are naturally delighted with the progress that has been made to date.

“This success is a result of the brilliant response by residents, the kerbside sort recycling system that we are using, and the excellent work being carried out by our dedicated recycling crews across the district.

“We also added three more vehicles to the recycling fleet to enable us to collect even more recyclables as residents continue to embrace the service.”

The Council’s Environment Services Overview Committee has place on record its congratulations to May Gurney for assisting with this achievement.
