Torbay residents can recycle even more

Since the introduction of the improved household waste collection service in September 2010, residents have really got into the recycling habit. The new system enables them to sort out a variety of items for recycling, resulting in less residual waste going to costly landfill.
Steve Ashman, TOR2's project director, said: "We are getting positive feedback from residents who have been asking if they can recycle a wider range of items, especially plastics.
"We have listened carefully to our customers, and I am delighted that, as from the week beginning Monday 5 December, our crews are picking up more recyclables.
"During the week beginning Monday 28 November, leaflets were delivered to more than 60,000 households across Torbay, giving residents helpful advice on the extended range of items that can be recycled.
"The leaflet includes relevant sections to help all residents, whether they live in properties using the individual recycling boxes or in properties with communal collections, such as flats."
This extended recycling service is being supported by Unilever, one of the world’s leading fast moving consumer goods companies and manufacturer of well-known household brands including Flora, Wall’s Ice Cream, Dove, Persil and Knorr.
Louis Lindenberg, global packaging sustainability director at Unilever, said: "Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Unilever. In the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, we made a global commitment to halve our environmental impact by 2020, including a pledge to increase recycling in countries all around the world, including the UK.
"This project with Torbay Council is a great example of our commitment in action and our way of helping consumers to do their part for the environment."
Councillor David Thomas, Torbay Council's executive lead with responsibility for waste disposal and recycling, said: "It is thanks to the fantastic efforts of Torbay residents that we have increased the Bay's recycling rate to 45%.
"We are aware they would also like to recycle plastics and other items, and we are really pleased that TOR2, has been able to find outlets for these items. We are also extremely grateful to Unilever for their support for our latest initiative."
