WEEE recycling boost in Essex

May Gurney has introduced new ‘bring banks' to encourage and enable people to recycle unwanted electrical items in four districts across Essex.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive was introduced into UK law in January 2007 to encourage everyone to reuse, recycle and recover electrical and electronic equipment.

Working under a contract with Essex County Council, May Gurney manages WEEE for all of the county council's household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) as well as all of the districts within Essex and Southend Borough Council.

Stuart Uster, WEEE manager May Gurney Environmental Services, said: “The first four WEEE bring banks have gone to bring sites in Epping Forest, Castle Point, Rochford and Tendring.

“We will work in partnership with each authority to publicise and promote these banks and increase the amount of WEEE that we recycle across the county.

“A further four bring banks will be delivered to sites in Uttlesford, Southend, Basildon and Brentwood when permissions have been obtained and locations confirmed.”

If this initial scheme proves a success there is an option for further bring banks to be implemented at other sites across Essex.

Weee connect is an industry partnership of the UK's largest WEEE producer compliance schemes and reprocessors. It aims to increase public awareness of the need to recycle WEEE. In the absence of a significant Government campaign weee connect believes it is critical to raise awareness in order for the UK to improve its WEEE collection rate.
