Bow Riverside recognised in London Cycling Awards

The project – known as Bow Riverside – comprises a suspended walkway and cycle path beneath Bow Flyover.
The walking and cycling path from the River Thames, along the Lea Valley to Waltham Abbey, has long suffered from a nightmare obstacle at Bow Flyover. In the past, it was necessary to leave the path, cross four lanes of traffic, and return to the route on the other side of the roundabout.
The new £2.3 million suspended path under the flyover was completed in August 2011 and is already well used by walkers and cyclists. It also improves access for pedestrians and cyclists to the nearby Olympic Park, and reconnects communities with DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliant access to an enhanced river corridor, new destination and improved natural habitat.
May Gurney's Professional Services department took the role of lead designer on the project. This involved liaising with a number of stakeholders including Transport for London, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation, Environment Agency and several local authorities.
Mark Blackwell, British Waterways' principal project manager, said: "The bridge connects to a suspended pathway, essentially creating a 'fly-under' the busy road junction. It means pedestrians and cyclists no longer need to leave the towpath and can enjoy an uninterrupted journey."
