Partners awarded International Environmental Hero status

MGWSP has been awarded International Environmental Hero status in recognition of its success in reducing CO2 on the Northamptonshire highways maintenance contract.

It is the second successive Environmental Hero award for MGWSP, the partnership between May Gurney and WSP which delivers highways maintenance in Northamptonshire.

The award is for achieving an impressive CO2 reduction of more than 40% against a baseline figure. This has been achieved through a series of initiatives on the Northamptonshire highways maintenance contract including gully dewatering bays, driver training and the use of pool cars, depot insulation, aerosol can piercing and the introduction of mains water coolers.

The trophy was presented by The Green Organisation at the 18th annual international awards ceremony at the House of Commons on 14 November.

The judges commented: “Being aware of their potential impact on the environment, MGWSP is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions. Measuring gas, electricity, water and fuel on a weekly basis, they are able to construct monthly reports. This helps reduce monthly waste and their carbon footprint.”

The Green Apple Awards campaign is run by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-profit organisation that recognises, rewards and promotes environmental best practice around the world.

Supporters include the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and various other professional bodies.

Roger Wolens, awards organiser, said: “To show continued interest in environmental issues during the current financial climate shows great foresight.

“To then go further and become an International Green Hero is an even bolder statement of environmental intent, and organisations that go the extra mile are demonstrating a serious commitment to the world around them. They invest in a better future for us all and deserve to be recognised for their efforts.”
