North Somerset landfill waste slashed by 30%

North Somerset residents recycled 64% of their rubbish during September 2011 which equates to 4,328 tonnes, compared to 3,714 tonnes during September 2010.
Dramatic improvements in recycling performance, and a corresponding reduction in waste sent to landfill, have been achieved since the introduction of a new recycling system by May Gurney during 2010. The success is being attributed to the efforts of householders and recycling crews.
The amount of waste sent to landfill in the first six months of 2011 was 19,432 tonnes compared to 27,555 tonnes in the first six months of 2010 – a reduction of 30%.
Councillor Peter Bryant, North Somerset Council executive member for waste, said: “Residents are doing a brilliant job and we would like to thank them for all their efforts. We are now one of the best performing unitary authorities in the country when it comes to recycling and this is credit to all households.
“And I must give full credit to the 31 recycling teams who hit the streets daily. They are the ambassadors of the service and are greatly appreciated.
“Without their dedication and support we could not possibly achieve these superb results. Recycling rates are up, waste sent to landfill is down and the new recycling and waste service is saving money.
“In these financial times this is a winning formula for both the council and our tax payers.”
