Ceremony marks progress on exciting new primary school project

A May Gurney-led team, appointed by the school, is delivering the design and build project which was awarded through the SmarteEast framework, following a design competition instigated by the school governors.
The new 1.5 form entry school will replace the existing single-form entry school. The design offers a passive low energy building that mitigates the acoustic characteristics of the site, with its close proximity to Stansted Airport, while being simple and economical to maintain.
Construction work commenced in June 2011 and is on programme for completion in June 2012, ready for opening in September 2012.
The tree planting ceremony was attended by representatives from Essex County Council, Uttlesford District Council and Takeley Parish Council, along with the governors, headteacher, parents, and pupils from the school.
Mark Gaby, the school governor co-ordinating the project, said: “We are fortunate to be working with the May Gurney team including Sarah Wigglesworth Architects together with project managers, Mace.
“They have been able to create a fantastic design which will fulfil our vision for a sustainable school and enhance the educational provision for current and future pupils in a high quality building that is both welcoming and inspirational.”
Mandy Line, headteacher, said: “The children, staff and governors of Takeley Primary School are really excited about our new school.
“The children are looking forward to having extra space for growing and cooking, using the courtyards for outdoor learning and making use of the fantastic library and story deck at the heart of the school.
“It is amazing to see the construction works develop and see the design being finally realised.”
Richard Clark, May Gurney contracts manager, said: “Construction works are on schedule. The external façade is racing ahead and due to be weather tight before the Christmas break, ready for the internal fit-out to start in the New Year.
“Externally the soft sports pitches are well established and will be ready for their first cut in the spring.”
The site team has actively engaged with pupils and there have been several site tours, with more to follow. The school is also issuing a monthly newsletter reporting on progress.
