New handbook helps Bridgend residents 'recycle for victory'

The free bilingual booklet, which is being delivered to every home in the borough, offers a simple guide to the recycling services provided by May Gurney on behalf of Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC)*. It also covers how to use household recycling centres and other environmental issues such as home composting, litter and dog fouling.
Designed for residents to read and keep, the handbook captures the famous ‘reduce, reuse and recycle' Home Front spirit of the 1940s but with a modern twist. Instead of asking communities to ‘dig for victory', the council and May Gurney want residents to ‘recycle for victory'!
Councillor Phil White, BCBC's cabinet member for communities, said: “The whole point of the new booklet is to bring all the information about our recycling scheme into one, easy-to-use guide.
“Our new partnership scheme with May Gurney has been up and running for more than a year now and we have been delighted with the response. Thanks to our residents we are now one of the UK's top-performing authorities for recycling and we were recently named Wales's council recycling champions in the national Cylch awards.
“I'm delighted that the children of Caerau have been able to help me launch this guide. Ultimately we are trying to create a cleaner, greener borough for the generations to come and we can all learn a lot from the enthusiasm of our youngsters for recycling.”

BCBC appointed May Gurney in April 2010 to deliver a new and improved waste and recycling service for local residents. MaGOS™ (May Gurney Optimised Solution) concentrates on resource recovery as opposed to waste collection. In less than a year, Bridgend went from being the second worst performer for recycling among Wales' 22 local authority areas to one of the best. The scheme recently won a public vote to top the Local Authority Partnership category of Cylch's Wales Recycling Awards. Earlier this year it also won a Green Apple Award and reached the final of the APSE Awards. It also won an award in the 2011 CIPR Cymru PRide Awards and was short-listed for the EDIE Awards for Environmental Excellence.
