In Essex we are responsible for maintaining 3,600 kms of roads and footpaths and 140,000 street lights, have a contract to manage 11 recycling centres and, as a partner in the SMARTEEast framework, we also carry out public building works.

Highways maintenance
The services we provide include carriageway and footpath maintenance, individual schemes up to £500k, winter maintenance, emergency callout, dealing with accidents and other obstructions, potholes and clearing fly tipping.

The contract features KPIs and targets for performance factors including proportions of recycled aggregates used, and quantities of waste sent to landfill.

Street lighting
Cartledge, our street lighting specialist business, looks after 140,000 lighting units across Essex.

Our dedicated support team supplies management information and liaises with the electricity supply company, and provides in-house design services in accordance with CEN13201 standards. And we use equipment from industry leaders such as Philips, to improve lights-on performance and reduce overall life-cycle costs.

The contract includes targets for recycling and minimising waste sent to landfill, including refurbishing and reusing damaged plastic components such as bollard shells, and recycling lamps.

Surface dressing
Our surface dressing teams are trained in accordance with the nationally recognised qualification Sector Scheme 13A, the Supply and Application of Surface Dressing to Road Surfaces - and we’re a long-serving member of the Road Surface Dressing Association.

Household waste recycling
May Gurney has a four-year, £16m contract with Essex County Council to operate and manage 11 recycling centres for household waste in south Essex. The contract commenced on 1 July 2009 and includes the option for extension by one or two years.

Essex County Council has 23 household waste recycling centres across the county where residents recycle materials including garden waste, engine oil, plastic bottles and scrap metal. The centres also take bulky items such as unwanted furniture, with those in good condition passed on for re-use to new owners.

Essex County Council has pledged to increase waste recycling to more than 45% in 2009, rising to more than 50% within the next three years. Providing the very best recycling facilities for residents is crucial to achieving these targets, which is why quality and customer service were very important factors in the council’s decision to award the contract to May Gurney.

SMARTEEast
SMARTEEast is a not for profit company jointly owned by Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk County Councils – and as a framework partner we’re delivering a range of public sector new-build and refurbishment projects.

SMARTEEast acts as an umbrella for regional framework contracts and the training and development of an extended supply chain, with the emphasis firmly on establishing long-term relationships.
