In December 2009, Bridgend County Borough Council appointed May Gurney as its waste management contractor, initially for seven years but with an option to extend for a further seven.
Under the contract, which is estimated to be worth around £75m, May Gurney took over from the previous contractor on 1 April 2010. The contract includes waste and recycling collections from around 60,000 households, operation of the waste management and transfer station and running the council's four civic amenity sites.
Bridgend Council has appointed May Gurney to work in partnership with them to deliver the Welsh Assembly Government's waste diversion targets.
The service solution developed for Bridgend focuses on delivering higher recycling rates and sending less waste to disposal, and includes recycling a far wider range of materials than more traditional approaches.
The service is centred on deploying MaGOS, May Gurney's next generation kerbside sort solution, an area where May Gurney is acknowledged as market innovators.
In June 2010 an enhanced recycling service was introduced under which all paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, tins, cans, textiles and food waste (even meat, fish and bones) are now collected at the kerbside.
