We’ve been working in partnership with Network Rail for many years to improve the quality of service for, and safety of, those of us who travel by rail.

We work predominantly in long-term framework contracts on the maintenance, replacement and improvement of structures, property and signaling right across the national rail network.

We deliver a wide range of maintenance and upgrading services for structures including bridges, embankments, tunnels, viaducts and earthworks.

Our long and successful involvement with the rail industry means we fully understand the key business drivers – increased efficiencies and value for money – and the unique needs of stakeholders. We use our integrated engineering and project management skills to deliver best value to rail schemes and the travelling public.

When the floods in summer 2007 washed away an embankment at Waleswood near Sheffield in South Yorkshire, we were called into action to get trains running again as quickly as possible. We managed to get the railway reopened in just seven weeks, which was described by Network Rail as ‘an excellent result - and one that the train operating companies greatly appreciate’.

And earlier this year we helped Network Rail achieve an important ‘first’ by replacing a bridge in Gateshead without a single train being affected or the need for any rail-replacement buses. The project was an important milestone as Network Rail looks to reduce the time taken over infrastructure improvements, and disruption for passengers.

The innovative design enabled the new structure to be built underneath the old bridge. The old bridge was then removed and the new one fully completed with a new track system and reopening to trains at line speed all in a single 10hr shift.

Heritage engineering
We are fortunate to possess a highly skilled labour force, passionate about their work, and capable of developing innovative solutions to difficult problems that exemplify heritage engineering.

In 2008 we completed eight years of complex repairs to the iconic Grade 1 Listed High Level Bridge (HLB), which carries a railway over one of Newcastle and Gateshead's most important traffic routes. The major strengthening and refurbishment works have extended the useful life of this iconic multi model transport asset by at least another 50 years.

Innovation has been at the heart of the project, including using R&D to justify ‘do nothing’ approaches, and state of the art engineered solutions to satisfy conservation principles. The £42m project captured the interest of the local community and has enjoyed success in no less than EIGHT prestigious industry awards.

Currently we are working on a project to refurbish the eastern barrel roofs at the Grade II listed Victoria Station, London’s busiest and most iconic station. Network Rail has entrusted this prestigious £24m project to us, and works commenced on site in August 2008.

The area to be re-roofed covers eight platforms, major communication boards, an entrance to the London Underground and many concessionary and retail outlets. The works include: significant steelwork repairs to the arched (tied) trusses; replacement of the roof coverings utilising cladding panels and glazing; full blasting and painting of the steelwork associated with the barrels and the low level canopies; and the renewal/relocation of lighting, public address systems, CCTV coverage and fire alarm systems.
