We’ve worked with the Environment Agency for many years to deliver a range of flood defence schemes, infrastructure enhancements and maintenance services.

We’ve been carrying out flood defence work since May Gurney was formed in 1926, so we have a considerable bank of knowledge and experience to call upon.

Since 2004 we have carried out flood defence work for the Environment Agency’s National Contractor’s Framework as part of Team Van Oord, a joint venture between Van Oord, May Gurney and Mackley.

Schemes completed by Team Van Oord in 2010 include:

• A flood defence scheme to protect residents living in the village of Valley on Anglesey in North Wales. The £1.2m project was to create a new tidal defence system by refurbishing the tidal doors that protect Valley from coastal flooding. The scheme also included the provision of emergency features in the event of the tidal doors failing.

• A project to improve Dawlish Warren Sea Defences to help protect businesses and property on the South Devon coast.

• A flood alleviation scheme at St Neots in Huntingdonshire which received an ICE East of England Merit Award The scheme was deemed by ICE to be of 'exceptional merit'.
