Project : Thickthorn Park and Ride SUDs

As the construction industry 'hardens up' more and more land, increasing levels of surface water runoff need to be dealt with.

Natural features such as ditches, streams and rivers - together with drainage pipes, culverts etc - can no longer be relied upon to cope during intense rainfall. Surface water needs to be stored temporarily, to allow controlled discharge to drainage systems.

Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUD's) create an underground storage reservoir for surface water runoff. SUD's allow storage capacity to be built in without compromising the use of the land on which they are built.

At the new Thickthorn Park & Ride site on the outskirts of Norwich, nearly 20 per cent of the car park area is built over SUD's. This equates to an extra 150 parking spaces that would not have been possible had a balancing pond been built instead.

The Thickthorn SUD's take all the surface water from the car park and, in this instance, the granular and permeable ground conditions allow the SUD's reservoir to drain out as a soakaway rather than into a drainage system. Consequently, no additional pressure has been put on the surrounding drainage systems.
