Client: Norfolk County Council
Project : Guist Bridge, Norfolk
The first bridge reconstruction project under the Norfolk Strategic Partnership - at Guist, to the north of the county - was delivered in an environmentally
sensitive manner, to high health and safety standards - and to programme.
The new structure comprises a two-span reinforced concrete bridge with a deck length of 22 metres, which replaced the previous three span bridge.
To minimise future maintenance, problematic deck joints and bearings have been designed out of the structure. Instead, movement is
accommodated by compressible material located behind both abutments.
The area in which the work took place is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the River Wensum is a Special Area of Conservation.
Special interest flora and fauna found within the river's channel include the marsh harrier, bats, white claw crayfish, lamprey, bullhead fish,
Desmoulin's whorl snail and various rare plants.
The design incorporates several environmental features including otter runs below the bridge on both banks, ledges for bat feeding, an improved
river bed habitat for crayfish and replacement trees.
May Gurney pro-actively implemented the project's environmental action plan - and the environmental impact was further minimised by crushing
and recycling the old bridge.
As a result, May Gurney received a commendation from the Environment Agency, in which the site team was singled out for special thanks and praise.
