Project : A11 dualling, Attleborough to Roudham Heath

May Gurney went to great lengths to prevent Great Crested Newts from straying onto the newly duelled A11 between Attleborough and Roudham Heath in Norfolk.

The measures included black polythene fixed to 600mm rail fencing and buried to a depth of 250 mm to prevent the newts coming onto the road.

And to make it safe for them to cross the new road 300mm ductile iron drains - complete with 'chimneys' to keep the temperature down -were installed. Mini-cameras were also installed to enable ecologists to monitor the movement of the newts through the tunnels.

During the project a licensed newt handler and full-time ecologist were employed on site.
