Sarah - Contracts Manager, Geotechnical Engineering
Age: 37 years
Before May Gurney
I studied for a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering at Southampton
University, and joined May Gurney as a summer placement
student at the end of my first year. During that time
I gained both site and office experience in design and
estimating, and returned to May Gurney during the following
summer.
I was then sponsored by May Gurney through my final year
at university, and signed a contract agreeing to return
to work for the company when I graduated - which I did,
with a 2:1, in 1991.
At May Gurney
I joined May Gurney as a Contracts Engineer but have been
promoted several times since then, and am now Contracts
Manager for the company’s Geotechnical division.
I head up a £22 million business comprising piling
works and other specialist geotechnical processes. I manage
a team of 25 staff, 70 site employees and many subcontractors.
May Gurney is a very exciting place to work. Since I have
been with the company I have seen it grow and change enormously,
but the values have remained the same throughout.
The range of work activities within the company gives
huge opportunities for employees to gain lots of different
experience.
May Gurney also looks after its employees – and
I’ve also found it to be a family friendly company
since I have had my children.
Looking forward, I’m very excited about where my
career might lead - there are so many opportunities within
the company.
I’ve also recently been through the company’s
TOPS management development programme, which has equipped
me with more skills and knowledge.
Away from work
I am married to Trevor, a partner in an accountancy firm,
and we live just north of Norwich.
During my time with May Gurney I’ve had two periods
of maternity leave in order to have my daughters Daisy
and Phoebe, who are aged six and three respectively.
Outside work I spend the majority of my time with my family.
We are in the process of having a new home built, which
I have designed and specified. We should be moving there
in the next few months and are naturally very excited
about this. |
