Richard - Civil Engineering Technician (Trainee)
Age: 22 years
Before May Gurney
Basically, I underachieved at school and sixth form –
but that’s made me all the more determined to succeed
now!
I left college after my 'A' levels and went to work with
my father building, developing and maintaining properties.
I gained good experience and picked up many new skills,
and learnt about different aspects of general building
and property maintenance. I also had a spell as labourer
working for another local builder.
I then changed direction and for 12 months worked
in the pub trade as a bar manager. This period out of
the industry confirmed that construction was definitely
the career for me - I enjoy the challenge and variety
of work.
At May Gurney
I joined May Gurney in September 2004 as Trainee Engineer.
I wrote a speculative letter to the company and was
asked to attend an interview, which went well. I was
invited to join the company and train at the CITB -
subject to passing the entrance exams.
18 months later I’m about to complete a civil
engineering BTEC and am working towards my NVQ Level
3. I intend to carry on studying – my next step
will be an HND in Civil Engineering. This course will
challenge my academic abilities but I think I have the
drive to complete it to a high standard.
While I was at the CITB I was named Technician of the
Year 2005 for my overall performance over the year –
a combination of effort, performance, achievement, attitude,
etc. It was a great honour – I’m proud to
have gained this recognition, especially having performed
poorly at sixth form.
Working for May Gurney is both challenging and rewarding.
I like the variety that the job offers - and everybody
that I have come across has been friendly and helpful.
It also gives me the best of both worlds - working both
on site and in the office.
In the future I may look to specialise further –
I am particularly interested in environmental issues
within engineering and construction.
Away from work
I have many hobbies and interests – sport mainly.
I play tennis and squash and also enjoy climbing, abseiling,
mountain biking and running, and have achieved many
awards for swimming.
I also go hill walking regularly in the Lake District
with my dad and brother. |
