I completed my GCSEs at school, then went on to study
Art & Design to GNVQ Level 2 and Foundation Level,
before completing an HND in Production Design.
I then worked in a factory for 18 months, spent three
weeks in Uganda with the scouts, and a month in Australia
on a working holiday.
I became interested in construction because I had a
desire to experience working in an outdoors environment,
and made enquiries about training at the CITB. I was
told that to join a course there I needed a sponsor
employer. May Gurney was on the list of sponsors so
I approached the company and was lucky enough to be
taken on, and then accepted at CITB.
At May Gurney
I joined May Gurney in June 2000 as a trainee, spending part of
my time working for the company and the rest of the time
at CITB at Bircham Newton in west Norfolk.
I enjoyed my time at CITB and was named Trainee of
the Year in 2000/2001, which is pretty prestigious.
I was also named Southern Area Trainee of the Year in
2004. By the time I left I had gained an NVQ Level 2
in General Construction.
I’m now a Ganger/Trainee Foreman with a range
of day-to-day responsibilities including keeping site
diaries and completing small plant sheets.
I am currently working in Great Yarmouth laying ducts
for streetlights, preparing bench bases and carrying
out other general groundworks.
In the next few years I aim to become a foreman - the
best one that I can be.
My work mates at May Gurney are excellent and I really
like the fact that I get to meet lots of different people
through my job.
Away from work
I like keeping fit - I run quite a bit and play football.
I need to really because I also enjoy going out for meals
and having a few beers….
