CIWEM 2010 'World of Difference' Awards (Avon WTW)

May Gurney’s entry, for the Avon Water Treatment Works Support Scheme carried out on behalf of South West Water, was ‘Highly Commended’ by the judges. Out of a total of 20 entries there was just one winner and one commendation this year - an indication of how highly the judges ranked May Gurney’s submission.
The international World of Difference Awards, which are run by The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), were established in 2004 to reward the leading proponents of the practical application of science and engineering for sustainable development.
To succeed entries have to present innovative ways of meeting society’s water and energy challenges. Solutions need to demonstrate sustainability by simultaneously benefiting society, the environment and the economy.

The site team was committed to environmental best practice from the outset and there are numerous aspects of the project where baseline environmental targets have been greatly exceeded, environmental impacts reduced, and May Gurney and SWW’s reputations enhanced.
Ian Fawcus, May Gurney project manager for the scheme, said: Our submission was based on sustainable construction and innovation, which meets all of our corporate sustainability and environmental principles.
”This commendation by the award judges is significant because it demonstrates independent international recognition for the works carried out by May Gurney.”
